Meet Your 2017-2018 PTA Board Members

Melinda Anderson is our PTA Parliamentarian this year.  She has three lovely children:  Layla (7th grade), River (4th grade), and Juliet (3rd grade).  Melinda helps keep PTA meetings on track, makes sure bylaws are checked and followed when needed, and checks all bank statements each month.  This is Melinda’s third year on the board.  She was the treasurer during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years too!  She has put in countless hours over MANY years for Hill.  We are so grateful for Melinda’s dedication to Hill Elementary.

Is your 5th grader interested in theatre?

Do they love acting in plays? Or doing behind the scenes tech? Murchison Middle School Advanced Theatre Production class is now accepting applications for the 2018-19 school year. Murchison’s 6th grade Theatre Production class is a year-long elective in which class time is devoted to preparing and presenting one-act plays, affording students the opportunity to learn the art of acting and design through practical experience. Go to www.murchisonmatadors.org/owens to download the application. Students can also sign up to take Theatre Arts (semester or year long), no application required. In Theatre Arts students study all aspects of theatre, e.g. acting, makeup design, costumes design, puppets. Please feel free to contact theatre teacher Nancy Owens at nancy.owens@austinisd.org for more information.

This weeks tragic event

We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Parkland, Florida earlier this week.  Attached is a parent resource you can use when talking with your child about safety, if you desire.

This week we have reinforced safety with staff, giving reminders about campus safety procedures.  It takes everyone to keep our Hill Dillos safe each day.  Please keep a vigilant eye while on campus and report anything unusual to the Hill Office Administration.

Hill Writing Challenge

This week we introduced our second Hill Writing Challenge of the year to all Hill students. Handouts for the challenge should have gone home earlier in the week with your child. The prompt for the challenge is “How do you promote peace in our school, our community and our world?” Our goal is for students to reflect on what they can do to create peace in their world, while also practicing a more expository form of writing that is crucial as our students advance. Thank you for encouraging your student(s) to take part in this awesome showcase opportunity. All writing will be read by Hill administration. Every student who participates will receive a prize, with some showcase papers being posted for the community to read at school. More specific information is present on the handout that went home. Extra copies are available in the office and a drop off box for completed Writing Challenge papers is now set up. The challenge ends March 9th. For more specific questions, feel free to email Mr. Drummond at jack.drummond@austinisd.org. We can’t wait to read about how our Dillos are going to promote peace in our world!

VOTE in the March Primary Election

Did you know the Primary election is on March 6th and early voting is February 20th-March 2nd?  Do you feel strongly about supporting public education?  Now is the time to research information about the candidates and vote for someone who wants to make public education a priority.
Please take the time to vote in the upcoming primary election.  Vote again in the run-off election, if necessary.  Then vote again in November.  We can make a difference!

Reminder-Balloons are not allowed at school.

The halls were filled with love on Wednesday for Valentine’s Day.  The office was also filled with balloons.  We wanted to remind parents that balloons are NOT allowed at school.  If your child brings one to school, it will be collected and kept in the office.  The balloon rule applies to class parties too.
