A Letter from Principal Newton

Welcome Back to School! We hope that your family had a relaxing, fun-filled time over the Winter Break.  We have really enjoyed getting to hear our students’ stories about their fun holiday adventures!  Students at Hill are working on setting goals for the new semester, as well as New Years’ Resolutions!  We are looking forward to a great semester of learning!

On January 3, all of the Anderson Vertical Team campuses joined together for professional development sessions led by teachers and staff in areas such as technology integration, content differentiation, project-based learning, student behavior support, and gifted and talented.  This was a great day for conversations about instruction across the campuses!  Then, on January 4, Hill staff participated in a team building exercise at the Central Texas Food Bank, creating over 12,000 meals for families in need.  That afternoon, campus grade level teams collaborated in planning for the 2019 Spring Semester.  We appreciate this time for planning and collaborating with teachers and staff.

Our Campus Architectural Team met this week with the Architectural Firm of Parkhill, Smith and Cooper.  This is the firm that has been selected to lead our campus in the Hill Modernization Project.  We are excited to begin the planning work for the Hill expansion project with this team.

Also, at our Campus Advisory Council meeting this week, personnel from the City of Austin, the Safe Routes to School Program, and Council Woman Allison Alter’s office came to share future planning for safety recommendations around Hill School.  We look forward to working with the SRTS department on future traffic and safety supports at arrival and dismissal.

Finally, the Hill UIL campus representatives have been selected in grades 2nd– 5th.  We are so proud of all of our Hill Dillos who tried out for these events.  Students should be receiving practice material to practice with at home.  The UIL Event will be held at Pillow Elementary School on February 9, 2019.

Science Night is just around the corner!  We hope to see everyone then!

Hill No Place for Hate Dress Up Days!!

Dress Up Days are here!  The Hill SEL-ebration Leadership Team of students have selected the following dress up days.  All of our dress up days are part of our No Place for Hate projects however, it is optional for students to participate.  Our first one is next Friday, January 25th.  Please let your families know! Principal Coffee Topic: 5th Grade Parents Middle School Q & A

Teacher luncheons, Band and athletic booster associations, Office volunteers, School dance planning, PTA executive board  — these are just some of the ways you can stay involved when your child goes off to 6th grade!  It’s the best way to get to know the campus, other parents, teachers, the Principal and staff, and what all the school events are about.

Come to Mrs. Newton’s Principal Coffee on January 31st at 7:45 in the library — current middle school parents (& maybe MMS Principal Mr. Clark) will be there to answer all your questions!   Being connected and involved at Murchison, or Kealing, will be different than at Hill, but it’s the best way to stay on top of all the middle school happenings!
(Plus – did you know?  Research show students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, have better social skills and adapt well to school!)

Book Fair: Be a Readerosaurus

Join us on Wednesday, January 23rd at 2:15 in the Multi-Purose room outside the library for our 1st meeting. We will be brainstorming & planning how to turn our library into a Jurassic World of reading. We’d love YOUR help!!
*If you have dinosaur decor & or a Dino costume we can borrow we’d love to talk!
Contact ashley.perraud@gmail.com with questions, ideas or just to let us know you’re planning to help!
