PTA Parent Ed – Talking about Diversity & Equity

Please join us on Thursday, December 7th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the MMS Cafeteria for our Parent Education Night. The December topic will be Talking With Our Kids About Diversity and Equity. Connect with other parents and learn how we can communicate, listen, and learn about diversity and equity in our community. Learn how we can help our kids do better today and help them understand the messages they are receiving. Dr. Richard Reddick and Ms. Khotan Shahbazi-Harmon will be sharing information to help parents make sense of today’s environment and facilitating a dialog building upon our close knit community. Both participated in Mayor Adler’s Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Inequities led by Dr. Paul Cruz and Dr. Collette Pierce Burnette. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, Dec. 7th.

Legacy of Giving food & coat drive – ONLY 2 DAYS LEFT!!

We are thrilled to announce that 5th grade is working with the Legacy of Giving project this November to donate both non-perishable foods and gently used or new coats to the Central Texas Food Bank and Coats for Kids.  Why coats?  When families have to choose between heat and food, they buy food.

5th grade wants to encourage every family to bring:

Non-Perishable Foods:  Healthy. Sturdy packaging. Not expired.  These items have been requested, if possible: peanut butter, canned chicken or tuna, low sodium vegetables, fruit packed in their own juices, dry pinto beans, brown rice, non-fat dry milk powder, and 100% whole grain cereals.

Coats: Warm, thick coats.  NO sweaters, hoodies, or thin fleece because they will not be warm enough.  Each donation may be a kid’s only coat AND blanket, so the coats need need to be warm.  Sizes up to adult XXL are needed.

Donation Due Date:  November 28th

Please Be Mindful

Eating at the tables by the front doors is a privilege that we would like to continue.

Please respect others and our custodians by cleaning up the table and surrounding area.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you drop it….pick it up!!

EMPTY BOWL PROJECT

Hill 5th grade Art Club members from the 2016-2017 school year (current 6th graders) made seven bowls to donate to the Empty Bowl Project as a community service art project. Their creative, hand-built bowls will raise $140 for this worthwhile program. Thank you to our wonderful Hill artists! Want to know more? http://www.austinemptybowl.org/

Exciting Details about Bond Construction for Hill!

With the passage of the AISD bond earlier this month, the district is moving quickly to implement projects throughout the district. Hill is slated for $17.8M worth of improvements in the 2017 Bond. Districtwide safety and security improvements (security cameras, fire alarms, security alarms) will begin first, starting in the summer of 2018. Additionally, there are some targeted projects to improve HVAC and Electrical systems which are currently scheduled to begin design in 2018 and be constructed in the summer of 2019. These amount to $724k of work.

The majority of Hill’s work will be the Phase 1 of a full modernization, shown on page two of the fact sheet here. The current plan has design beginning in 2019, the construction likely starting the summer of 2020. We are a little too far out to know exactly how the construction will be sequenced, but where possible the remodels to spaces in the existing building will take place in the summer, while additions can occur year round.

Other projects within the Anderson Vertical Team are also moving forward. Most significantly is the construction of a new 6th grade center at Murchison and the expansion at Doss. Construction on those projects is expected to begin next Fall.

We are very excited about the future and all the improvements that are planned for Hill. Thank you for supporting our schools!
