A Letter from Principal Drummond

Dear Hill Community,
Thank you for making our teachers feel special and recognized this past week! As we continue to wind down the year, your support and partnership mean so much. We are now ready for one of our busiest weeks of the year with STAAR upon us!

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be taking the STAAR math assessment this Tuesday and the reading assessment this Wednesday. 5th graders will also be taking the science assessment on Thursday. Thank you for ensuring that your student reports to campus by 7:45 am on those days. We will anticipate heavier traffic as normal due to virtual students reporting back for testing. For more information, please refer to the grade level letters all families of those grade levels were emailed last week on 4/28. Please remember that if your student is virtual and just coming for testing, we will plan to release them to you at the front of the school in the car line at 12:45 pm. For all of our current in-person students, dismissal will happen as normal. Don’t forget those water bottles, plenty of snacks, and a good night’s sleep. We are proud of the progress our students have made this year and know they will do their Dillo Best!

The Health and PE Department has been revising the K-2 Human Sexuality and Responsibility curriculum for the 2021-2022 school year; the current curriculum is more than 12 years old. Parent feedback is important to guide this work. This year, principals are holding community meetings to invite our PreK-2nd grade parents to learn about the HSR policies, K-2 revised curriculum, and how parents can take the survey. The Hill community meeting for this information will be on Tuesday, May 18th at 3:30 pm via Zoom. More information will follow in our next letter to the community.

5th Grade Families: Please mark your calendars for two end of the year events during our last week of school. On Wednesday, June 2nd at 4:00 pm, we will hold a 5th grade car parade to kick-off our celebration of our outgoing Dillos. The following day (the last day of school) we are excited to bring back the special tradition of our 5th grade graduation walk. This will begin at 2:15 and parents will be able to view as part of it will take place outside. More information will follow as we get closer to the events themselves.

This is your final reminder to participate in the virtual open house process and to take the survey to give input on the construction of an Austin Woods sidewalk. We appreciate the members of our CAC who discussed this at our Monday meeting. We had community input from a representative of most of our Austin Woods neighbors who shared with us that their preference is option 2 out of the survey choices. The consensus from our campus advisory council was that options 1 and 2 created the safest route to school, which is our goal. We wanted to provide you with this context but know that in our large community, we value your individual opinion during this open house process. The survey will close this Friday.

Be sure to encourage your 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to get plenty of sleep and exercise this week so they feel their best for our STAAR testing week. Eat those “Go” foods! Have a fantastic week, everyone.

Nurse AND Childcare Appreciation Week May 10th-14th

We are thrilled that it’s finally time to honor our number one nurse, Dianna Pierson RN and part-time nurse, Lynda Narvaez.  Nurse Pierson and Nurse Narvaez have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic to keep our Dillos, big and small, healthy and safe and we are so grateful for them.  It’s also time to celebrate our outstanding childcare staff who are here for our dillos every day.  Aimee Yeldell, Alejandro Descalzo Gutierrez, Diva Dale, Hala Ketab, and Nita Huff, we are so thankful for you!  Hill families, please don’t let this week pass by without saying a great big thank you to our Nurse and Childcare Staff.  You’re invited to ring the bell at the front doors to drop off items or have them delivered to campus.  Please make sure their names are included or email hill@austinisd.org to let the office know what is coming in and for whom.  Thank you for showing these favorites how much we appreciate them!  Reach out to appreciation@hillelementary.com with any questions.

Hill Garden Revitalization Project

The Hill Garden Revitalization Project will be kicking off soon and we will be having one last Cleanup Work Day THIS SATURDAYMay 15th from 10:00am – 12:00pm in anticipation of getting started after the school year and growing season with the goal to have everything ready for late September early October completion.

The garden beds will be reconfigured  in a linear fashion for easier accessibility and for maintenance of the garden grounds.  New metal beds, a mulch and stepping stone walk surface and a new pathway to the garden to allow for more Garden days when it’s a bit wet outside.  The garden beds will be self watering and will serve teachers as well as the Hill Community.  We are planning on reusing the salvageable wood timbers/repurposed limestone to revitalize our Natural Wildlife Preserve near the School entrance among other things.

That said, this is a massive project and we want anyone and everyone that wants to help be a part of this amazing opportunity to have the best garden for our Hill Students, Teachers and Community.  Please let Elissa Adams and Julie Neitzel know if you are able to make it.

Also, to join our Hill Garden Community, email HillSchoolGarden@gmail.com and please join the Facebook Group below for updates and future work events.  Click here for the Hill Dillo Garden FB Page.  We hope to see you Saturday!
